The Royal Spanish Academy defines the gota fría, or cold drop, as a “mass of air that emerges from a very cold current and descends on another of hot air, producing great atmospheric disturbances.”
A gota fría struck the western Mediterranean with a terrible fury in the autumn of 2019. Tonnes of debris were swept into the sea by the torrential rains, only to be promptly washed ashore by the waves. The branches and trunks that covered the beach were gradually transformed into shelters for fishermen trying their luck at night.
